Meet Megan – Our Newest AHB Rockstar!

Meet Megan, AHB’s newest Rockstar! Megan is just beginning her journey at A Healthy Balance and will be blogging her progress weekly. Make sure to check back in and cheer her on as she takes on some pretty big goals! We know she can do it and are excited to be on her team

I know how cliche it is to start the new year off having “getting fit and healthy” as your main resolution. Well, here I am saying it. AGAIN. But for the first time in awhile, I actually believe I will stick with it. As the great Herb Brooks once said “This is YOUR time,” and I know it is. I had my first training session with Alicia today and she brought up me being the next AHB Rockstar. I have to be honest, I already think I am a rockstar because I do a mean “Shoop” by Salt-n-Peppa performance at karaoke but the whole “healthy” part I definitely don’t have down. So why not right? If Alicia thinks I should do it I am going to do it! She already kicked my butt today so God only knows what will happen if I don’t do this! Plus, I could be like a Carrie Bradshaw for weight loss…HA!

So how did I get here, you ask?

I didn’t used to be like this. I played sports growing up and was pretty healthy. Then, my whole world changed suddenly in one fateful night in 2008 when I was involved a terrible car accident. Long story short, I was in the hospital for two weeks. I had a concussion, broke my tibia and fibia in my left leg, and broke the left side of my clavicle. Talk about luck of the Irish, right? I went through two surgeries on my leg during those two weeks but didn’t have anything done on my collarbone since I had to use crutches and a walker. When I got home from the hospital I was in bed or sitting down for most, if not all of the day. This can really mess with you. I looked towards food for comfort and gained weight. When I was finally able to get back into a normal routine and be more active about a year and half later, it was painful. And since it was painful, I didn’t want to do it.

Then 2012 rolled around and I was told I had to undergo two more surgeries. I needed to have the plate and pins removed from my leg and then have a rod put in my collarbone because it never healed correctly. Another set back. Perfect. When those surgeries were done I was in the same boat I was in in 2008. And, yet again, turned to food. This is by far the heaviest I have ever been. I never thought I would be the person to hate pictures and not want to go out anymore, but here I am.

I signed up for a few 5Ks over the past year but never really did well. I would try to train but would lose interest and motivation after a certain point. I joined Weight Watchers as well but that only stuck for a month. Thinking about my life and where I am at now, I know I need to change. I can’t and won’t have that accident define my life and well-being. After meeting Alicia, for the first time I can honestly say, I think I can do this. And I WILL do this. So here’s to 2014 being my year of running a successful 5K, doing a perfect pushup(s), dominating burpees, getting more coordinated (Alicia can attest to this) and letting go of all the hurdles of the past few years!

You’re going to do great! My cousin just broke her tibia and fibia in a car accident – you have my sympathy…the recovery seems so challenging. If you can get through that, you can beat Alicia’s toughest workouts!

Thanks, Meg! My thoughts go out to your cousin and her recovery!
